JUST IN: Obasa’s Security Restored as Meranda’s Withdrawn Amid Leadership Shift in Lagos Assembly

 

Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, appears set for a return to office. His security details have been reinstated, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the current Speaker, have been withdrawn.

 

Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, was unanimously elected Speaker after his impeachment, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos. However, despite not officially resigning, her position reportedly became untenable following a high-level intervention by key leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

 

Over the weekend, influential APC figures, including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and several lawmakers, convened to resolve the crisis in the Assembly. The outcome of the meeting reportedly favored Obasa’s reinstatement, with sources stating that his impeachment was deemed illegal and that lawmakers were directed to restore him to his position.

 

The timeline for the House to reconvene and formalize these changes remains uncertain. Meranda had adjourned plenary indefinitely two weeks ago after a session was disrupted by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
