JUST IN: Police Confirm Killing of Bauchi Youth by Soldier
Tafawa Balewa Local Government of Bauchi State, the Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Habibu Aminu by joint military operatives of Operation Safe Haven.
Eyewitnesses reported that one person was killed and six others sustained bullet wounds when the military raided the homes of certain individuals following an altercation at the main checkpoint in Lere.
SP Ahmed Wakil, the Command Public Relations Officer, revealed the details of the incident, which stemmed from a confrontation between members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and personnel of Operation Safe Haven stationed in the area.
Following the altercation, the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Mohammed, dispatched a Unit of the Mobile Police Force to reinforce the area and established a team of detectives to conduct a thorough investigation.
“The officers involved in the incident will be identified and held accountable according to the law,” stated Wakil. “The Commissioner of Police is committed to a meticulous investigation process that utilizes all necessary protocols, including technical and scientific tools, to ensure justice is served.”
Survivors of the incident, including Babawo Lauwawu and Zaharedden Mohammed, described a chaotic scene following the sudden imposition of a curfew on Lere town. Lauwawu recounted how he was shot in the leg despite complying with the curfew, while Mohammed, who was shot in the eye, explained the misunderstanding that arose between the military and PDP supporters returning from a campaign.
Nurudden Isa, another victim and driver involved in the incident, detailed his harrowing experience of being dragged from his home and beaten by military personnel, resulting in injuries to his face and body.
