JUST IN: “Nnamdi Kanu Medically Fit to Stand Trial,” NMA Tells Court
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is medically fit to stand trial.
This development follows a September 26 court order by Justice James Omotosho directing the NMA president to set up an investigative panel to assess Kanu’s health. The directive came in response to an application seeking Kanu’s transfer from Department of State Services (DSS) custody to the National Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory for medical treatment. Kanu had claimed his health had worsened in detention, citing liver and pancreatic complications, a lump under his armpit, and dangerously low potassium levels. The prosecution opposed the transfer, arguing that adequate care was already being provided.
At Thursday’s hearing, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo confirmed that the NMA report had been received on October 13, filed in court, and served on the defence. Kanu’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, acknowledged receipt of the report. In open court, the NMA panel concluded that Kanu is fit to stand trial.
Justice Omotosho, satisfied with the findings and noting the absence of objections from both parties, confirmed that the trial could proceed. He announced that six consecutive dates would be scheduled for Kanu to present his defence. Agabi requested a private meeting with Kanu in court to prepare, expressing concerns about potential eavesdropping at the DSS facility. Omotosho approved the request and set Wednesday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for the private conference between Kanu and his lawyers.
