JUST IN: NLC President Joe Ajaero Vows to Continue Fight After Police Questioning Over Alleged Terrorism Financing
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has returned to the Labour House after being questioned by the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja over allegations of terrorism financing and criminal conspiracy. Ajaero, who was accompanied by Deputy Lead Counsel Maxwell Opara of Falana & Falana’s Chambers and other legal representatives, arrived back at the Labour House at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Undeterred by the police inquiry, Ajaero reaffirmed his commitment to the ongoing struggle for the implementation of the new minimum wage law, recently signed by President Bola Tinubu. Addressing the media, Ajaero emphasized that facing such challenges is part of his role as a labor leader.
“We have gone there and we are back. You can’t do this job without facing these types of hazards. It’s expected,” Ajaero stated, recalling past experiences of similar encounters, including his time in detention during the Abacha regime.
Ajaero vowed to continue advocating for the welfare of Nigerian workers, particularly the swift implementation of the new minimum wage. He thanked the NLC and its allied bodies for their unwavering solidarity.
Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Comrade Deji Adeyanju, who was also present during the police visit, confirmed on social media that the questioning was brief. Adeyanju urged the police to release all detained protesters or charge them to court without delay.
The NLC has warned the Tinubu government that any attempt to detain Ajaero will be met with a nationwide shutdown. As tensions rise, all eyes are on the government’s next move in this escalating standoff.
