JUST IN: Mass Casualties Feared After Petrol Tanker Explosion on Kano-Hadejia Expressway
A devastating petrol tanker explosion has occurred along the Kano-Hadejia expressway in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leaving many feared dead and hundreds injured.
According to Zagazola Makama, a publication specializing in counter-insurgency in the Lake Chad region, the tragic incident unfolded late on Tuesday night, around 11:45 p.m., and raged on until the early hours of Wednesday, around 3:15 a.m.
The explosion set off a massive fire, which eyewitnesses say spread rapidly, causing extensive damage and overwhelming emergency responders. Unverified reports indicate that at least 300 people sustained serious injuries in the blaze, though official casualty numbers are yet to be confirmed. Rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing, as authorities work to determine the full scope of the tragedy.
Heartbreaking videos of the inferno have circulated widely on social media, capturing the intense flames and destruction caused by the explosion. Emergency services are currently focused on providing medical assistance to the injured and identifying the victims.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
