One Killed, Three Injured in Fiery Tanker Explosion on Otedola Bridge

A devastating gas tanker explosion under the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway claimed the life of one person and left three others with severe burns on Tuesday night. The incident, which occurred as the tanker reportedly attempted to navigate a bend outward from the bridge at Omole, caused widespread panic among residents and motorists, forcing many to flee the area.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the three injured individuals—all adult males—were rescued and rushed to the Gbagada General Hospital’s burns unit. The body of another adult male was recovered at the scene. Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the details, noting that the agency’s Tiger Response Team was immediately deployed to manage the emergency. The affected section of the road was cordoned off, and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also confirmed the incident, revealing that the intense fire spread to nearby properties, including a church, residential building, and several vehicles parked at a mechanics’ village under the bridge, close to CMD Road. LASTMA reported a complete traffic blockade in and out of the area as emergency teams worked to bring the situation under control.

Despite the danger, the agency expressed concern over reports that some motorists attempted to drive through the burning scene, calling the behavior “extremely hazardous” and urging the public to adhere to safety advisories.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which arrived at the scene around 8:00 PM, said the explosion involved a 30-tonne DAF gas truck with an unknown registration number. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze late into the night as efforts to contain the situation and recover affected vehicles and properties remained ongoing.
