Wike Supervises Demolition in FCT Community as Residents Pelt Stones, Resist Relocation
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday personally oversaw the demolition of structures in the Gishiri community, located in Katampe District, Abuja, following the refusal of residents to vacate the area.
Speaking during the exercise, Wike explained that the structures were illegally erected along a designated road corridor. He noted that despite multiple engagements with community leaders and the provision of compensation and an alternative relocation site, the residents failed to comply, thereby obstructing an ongoing infrastructure project.
The FCT Administration had awarded a contract for the construction of a dual carriageway connecting Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway at NICON Junction to Wole Soyinka Way. The project, which is scheduled for completion in May, has been hindered by the continued occupation of the area.
Wike emphasized that the government had made adequate efforts to avoid the demolition, including providing compensation and a relocation site, and holding several meetings with the traditional leaders of the community. He recalled giving the community an additional one-week grace period after their plea for more time but noted that there was still no progress on the ground.
Expressing his frustration, Wike said the government could no longer watch a few individuals sabotage a project intended for the benefit of the larger public. He said he informed the community leaders of his decision to return from Milan, Italy, specifically to supervise the demolition, signaling the seriousness of the administration’s stance.
Wike reiterated that the government had acted in good faith and given residents over three months to vacate. He insisted that the work must continue, stating that the director of compensation and resettlement would return to the community to explore any remaining feasible options for affected residents. However, he added that those who still refuse to cooperate would have to bear the consequences.
The demolition exercise was met with resistance, as some angry residents pelted stones at bulldozer operators. Security forces, including police and other agencies, were forced to deploy teargas to disperse the crowd and restore order.
