JUST IN: ISWAP Reportedly Attacks Nigerian Military Convoy, Abducts Serving General, Soldiers Killed
Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) reportedly ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State on Friday night, abducting a serving general and killing multiple soldiers, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), according to HumAngle. The general, said to be a brigade commander, was reportedly leading the troops at the time of the attack.
If confirmed, this would be the first recorded instance of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline. While insurgents have previously killed high-ranking officers, abductions of this nature are rare.
Military authorities have not yet issued a statement on the incident, and details about the number of casualties remain unclear. Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, has not responded to inquiries about the attack.
