Former Super Eagles Coach Dies at 88

The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of former Super Eagles interim head coach, Monday Sinclair, who passed away at the age of 88.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper Peterside Idah, who paid a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. Idah, who played under Sinclair at Sharks FC, described him as a mentor and father figure. “Our daddy is gone. What a man,” Idah wrote. “He signed me to play for Sharks and gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna.”

Sinclair’s coaching journey began with the now-defunct Sharks FC of Rivers State and spanned several top Nigerian clubs including Niger Tornadoes, Enugu Rangers, and Bayelsa United. In 1997, he was appointed interim coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national team. He later managed the Equatorial Guinea national team, further cementing his reputation across West Africa.

Before his coaching career, Sinclair was a player for the Green Eagles—as Nigeria’s national team was then known—in the 1960s. Known for his keen eye for talent, he was instrumental in the early careers of some of Nigeria’s football greats such as Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah.

Tributes have poured in, highlighting Sinclair’s pivotal role in grassroots development and his legacy as a builder of champions.
