JUST IN: Atiku Finally Dumps PDP, Declares Party Has Lost Its Way

 

Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a decades-long association with the party he helped found. In a letter dated July 14 and addressed to the PDP ward chairman of Jada Ward 1 in Adamawa State, Atiku announced his immediate withdrawal from the party, citing a departure from its founding principles.

 

Atiku, who ran as the PDP’s presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, expressed deep disappointment with the direction the party has taken. “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he wrote. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

 

While thanking the PDP for the opportunities it offered him—including two terms as Vice President—Atiku described his decision as heartbreaking but unavoidable. A media aide confirmed the authenticity of the letter, which has been circulating online.

 

Atiku’s resignation comes amid growing speculation about his next political move. He has recently been at the forefront of efforts to unite opposition figures under a common platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. Those efforts led to the adoption of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s new political base, aimed at mounting a strong challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
