JUST IN: Flooding Claims Two Lives in Abuja’s Trademore Estate

Tragedy struck in Abuja on Monday as heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in the Trademore Estate in Lugbe, resulting in the deaths of at least two people. The downpour, which affected the area along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Road, has once again highlighted the estate’s vulnerability to floods.

Trademore Estate, home to numerous civil servants and other residents, has a long history of flooding issues. A resident captured the flooding on video, pleading for intervention from the Federal Government and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. The resident reported that two individuals had been swept away by the floodwaters.

This incident follows a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which on Sunday predicted thunderstorms and hazy weather conditions from Sunday to Tuesday in various parts of the country.

In response to the forecast, the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) announced it has activated its flood vanguards and local emergency management committees across the six area councils. “The FCT Emergency Management Department, FEMD, has placed its vanguards and the local emergency management committees in the six area councils on alert following early warnings of possible flooding in the Territory,” stated Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs for the department.

Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety as the weather conditions persist.
