JUST IN: FG Suspends Accreditation of Degree Certificates from Benin Republic and Togo
In response to a recent revelation of a degree being obtained from a Benin Republic university in under two months, the Federal Government has taken decisive action by suspending the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from both Benin Republic and Togo.
Augustina Obilor-Duru, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, stated in a Tuesday press release, “This report lends credence to suspicions that some Nigerians deploy nefarious means and unconscionable methods to get a degree with the end objective of securing graduate job opportunities for which they are not qualified.”
The suspension, effective from January 2, 2024, will remain in place pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation. This investigation will involve collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, the relevant ministries responsible for Education in Benin and Togo Republics, as well as the Department of State Security Services (DSSS) and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).
The Ministry of Education is actively seeking assistance from the public to provide information that will aid the investigative committee in finding lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences.
The press release highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to combat the issue of illegal institutions, both abroad and domestically, preying on unsuspecting Nigerians. The Ministry emphasized its commitment to reviewing and strengthening strategies to address loopholes, processes, and procedures, and vowed to deal decisively with any conniving officials involved.
As the Federal Government takes this bold step, it aims to uphold the integrity of educational qualifications and ensure that the pursuit of knowledge remains a legitimate and honorable endeavor.
