Imo State University Expels 15 Law Students, Including Catholic Priest and University Lecturer, for Exam Malpractice

Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, has taken a stringent stance against academic misconduct, expelling 15 final-year law students for their alleged involvement in various forms of examination malpractice.

Among the expelled students is a Catholic priest from the Orlu Diocese, whose identity has been kept confidential, alongside a lecturer affiliated with the university’s Department of Management Sciences.

The university’s decision to expel these students was reportedly communicated before Christmas Day. A source within the institution revealed that the expulsion announcement was accompanied by a threat from an official who spearheaded the disciplinary action to take legal recourse if the decision was not upheld.

While some have criticized the severity of the expulsion, the source affirmed the guilt of the students involved. Notably, it was mentioned that several students across various departments had engaged in similar malfeasance, suggesting a broader issue within the university.

Details emerged regarding the methods employed by the expelled students, including hiring individuals to take exams on their behalf and using mobile phones during examinations. The Catholic priest, unable to travel due to insecurity in the Orlu region, allegedly enlisted a substitute to write the exam on his behalf. His journey to Owerri was reportedly interrupted when unknown gunmen fired at his vehicle.

Additionally, the source disclosed opposition from a group advocating the expulsion, particularly targeting a female lecturer studying law within the university while being employed by the same institution.

Despite these revelations, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Sir Ralph Njoku-Obi, claimed to have no information on the matter when contacted. The expulsion has sparked discussions within the academic community, raising questions about the prevalence of academic misconduct and the university’s approach to maintaining academic integrity.
