JUST IN: ASUU Elects New President
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected a new president during its 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin. The position was won by Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos.
Professor Piwuna takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The election was contested between Piwuna and Professor Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to verified sources.
His election comes at a time when the union is navigating pressing issues including disputes over the sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government, concerns over academic brain drain, and growing speculations about a possible strike.
