JUST IN: APGA Suspends Ezeonwuka, Obi-Okoye, Obiogbolu, Others for Anti-Party Activities as Gov Soludo Escapes Sanction
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has announced the suspension of prominent party members for engaging in anti-party activities. Among those suspended are Barr. Sylvester Ezeonwuka, Mr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, and Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, as well as candidates involved in the controversial Anambra Local Government congresses linked to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s camp.
During a press conference held on September 26, 2024, at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Abuja, APGA’s National Chairman, Chief Edozie Njoku, disclosed that the suspensions followed extensive deliberations aimed at repositioning the party and enforcing discipline. The NWC has invoked sections of the Owerri 2019 Constitution, which mandate the suspension of members whose actions cause harm to the party’s reputation.
“The party has vowed to address various layers of infractions and indiscipline, especially from those indulging in anti-party activities,” Njoku said. He added that these measures are crucial for maintaining the unity and stability of APGA ahead of key elections.
Despite widespread speculation, Governor Soludo narrowly escaped suspension but was strongly condemned by the party leadership. Njoku warned Soludo and other APGA elected officials to “redeem themselves” or face further disciplinary action.
The suspension of key members comes just days before the Anambra Local Government elections scheduled for September 28, 2024, which have been marred by controversy. Suspended members were accused of orchestrating illegal congresses and primaries to field candidates aligned with Soludo for the elections, a move the party deems unconstitutional.
The NWC also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for adhering to legal processes while condemning the actions of Chief Victor Oye, a former party member facing legal battles. A disciplinary committee has been established to investigate the suspended members further and recommend appropriate sanctions.
Chief Njoku reaffirmed the party’s commitment to discipline and fairness, stating, “No one is bigger than the party, and we will not tolerate any actions that undermine APGA’s integrity.” He called on all members to respect the party’s leadership and contribute to its growth.
With these suspensions, APGA aims to restore order and prepare for upcoming elections, while maintaining its stance on party discipline.
