JUST IN: Anambra Police Confirm Rearrest of Escaped Kidnap Suspect in Justice Azuka Murder
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the rearrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the kidnapping and murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Ossai was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following an extensive intelligence-led operation that spanned multiple Nigerian states and even a neighbouring West African country.
The suspect, who had earlier escaped from custody, attempted to flee upon sighting police operatives but was shot in the leg and overpowered. His recapture comes as a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the high-profile murder case that has stirred public outrage.
The Police Command has since briefed the family of the late lawmaker as well as the leadership of the Anambra State House of Assembly. The Commissioner of Police also publicly acknowledged lapses that led to the suspect’s initial escape and assured that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
Investigators are currently acting on intelligence obtained from the suspect to track down other fleeing members of the criminal syndicate linked to the crime.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to bringing all involved to justice and ensuring the safety and security of Anambra residents.
