“It is really not important” — Lookman shrugs off clash with Osimhen after Mozambique win

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has downplayed the on-field exchange with Victor Osimhen during Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The incident took place in the 62nd minute at the Fes Sports Complex following a disagreement over a pass, with Osimhen visibly reacting in frustration. Broadcast footage showed teammates stepping in as tensions briefly flared.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Lookman dismissed the episode, insisting it had no bearing on the team’s performance or outcome. “I don’t think that is really important,” he said. “The team won 4–0. He is a top striker, but it is really not important.”

Lookman was named Man of the Match after scoring once and providing two assists. He confirmed that he had not spoken with Osimhen since the incident.

Captain Wilfred Ndidi attempted to calm Osimhen, who later signalled to head coach Eric Chelle to be substituted. The Napoli striker briefly disengaged from play before being replaced by Moses Simon in the 68th minute.

Lookman also reiterated that his focus at the tournament is collective success rather than individual recognition. Despite already scoring three goals, the Africa Player of the Year said Nigeria’s progress remains the priority.
