Israel Launches Ground Invasion of Gaza Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Israeli military has initiated a ground invasion, marking one of its most extensive and ambitious incursions into the region since Hamas conducted cross-border attacks on October 7, as reported by The New York Times.

Israeli troops advanced into the northern part of Gaza on Friday evening, launching a massive aerial and artillery bombardment that continued into Saturday. Notably, the military has not officially declared this operation as an invasion, although they shared videos of Israeli forces targeting Hamas anti-tank positions.

In a late announcement, the Israeli army disclosed, “Starting early last night, the Israeli military, led by combined combat teams of armored, engineering, and infantry forces, is operating on the ground in the northern Gaza Strip.”

This declaration came more than 24 hours after their forces entered the Palestinian territory, underscoring the expansion of the conflict.

As the Israeli ground operation persists alongside continuous bombardment, the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has raised alarm about the potential for a devastating loss of civilian lives. He stated, “Given the manner in which military operations have been conducted until now, in the context of the 56-year-old occupation, I am raising the alarm about the possibly catastrophic consequences of large-scale ground operations in Gaza and the potential for thousands more civilians to die.”

Internationally, Saudi Arabia and Oman have both condemned the Israeli ground operations for endangering Palestinian civilian lives. Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry warned of the dangerous violations of international law and called for an immediate halt to these actions.

Oman expressed concerns about the catastrophic consequences of an Israeli ground invasion, emphasizing the importance of international intervention to end the conflict and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza. Oman’s foreign ministry labeled Israel’s actions as potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The widespread communication blackout in Gaza, with internet connections and phone lines down, has hampered the assessment of the situation. Hamas’s armed wing confirmed their engagement in combat with Israeli soldiers within Gaza.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israeli strikes in the past several hours have claimed nearly 400 Palestinian lives, raising the death toll to over 7,700 since the conflict’s outbreak on October 7. The blackout has made it challenging for aid agencies and UN staff to maintain contact with their personnel in the region.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a ceasefire, expressing deep concern about the Israeli military’s communication blockade and its intensified bombardment in Gaza. He cited the need to reverse the situation and highlighted the growing international consensus for a humanitarian pause in the conflict.

The blackout has created a challenging humanitarian operation for UN agencies, with limited communication and difficulty in reaching affected areas.

The United Arab Emirates has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, seeking briefings from UN aid chiefs on the situation in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its call for de-escalation and a return to negotiations in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Nigeria advocates for a two-state solution and a durable and sustained humanitarian truce, emphasizing the dire situation in Gaza and the suffering of innocent civilians, particularly women and children.

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the crisis and find a path to peace.
