Israel Launches Fresh Strikes on Beirut Amid Escalating Tensions
Israel launched fresh airstrikes on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, in the early hours of Wednesday. The Israeli military announced the offensive via social media platform X, confirming the strikes targeted what it described as “terrorist locations” in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Prior to the strikes, Israeli forces issued multiple evacuation orders for residents in several buildings in the area, signaling a growing intensity in the conflict. As of early reports, there were no immediate details on casualties or property damage.
This latest escalation follows an Iranian missile attack on Israel the previous evening, where around 180 rockets were fired, according to estimates from the Israeli army. The attack, which Iran claimed was in retaliation for the killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, has raised concerns about further escalation in the region.
In response to the Iranian missile barrage, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed swift retaliation, further intensifying fears of broader regional conflict. The situation worsened after Israeli ground forces initiated a limited operation targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon.
With tensions flaring on multiple fronts, fears are growing that the conflict could spiral into a larger regional war, drawing in neighboring countries and global powers.
This follows international responses, including Russia’s strong condemnation of Israeli ground operations in Lebanon and U.S. President Joe Biden’s commitment to supporting Israel’s defense against further Iranian aggression.
