Israel Announces Cut-Off of Electricity, Other Supplies to Gaza, Escalating Tensions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has confirmed a decision to sever the supply of electricity, fuel, and essential goods to the Gaza Strip. The decision comes amidst rising tensions in the region and marks a heightened escalation of the long-standing conflict.
As of last Saturday, Gaza plunged into darkness as Israeli authorities cut off the power supply to the region. This move further compounds the hardships faced by Gaza’s residents, who have already endured years of economic and humanitarian challenges due to the Israeli and Egyptian blockade imposed since 2007, ostensibly for security reasons.
Under the blockade, Israel exercises control over Gaza’s airspace, shoreline, and tightly regulates the flow of goods and people through its border crossings. Similarly, Egypt maintains strict control over its border with Gaza.
In a strongly worded statement, Prime Minister Netanyahu declared, “We are embarking on a long and difficult war against Hamas.” He went on to attribute the escalation to what he termed as a “murderous attack by Hamas.” This offensive, he emphasized, “will continue without reservation and without respite – until the goals are achieved.”
Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to restoring security to the citizens of Israel, underlining his determination to succeed in this endeavor. As the situation unfolds, tensions in the region are expected to rise, with potential repercussions that may reverberate far beyond the borders of Gaza.
