“I’ll Be in PDP, Work for Coalition in 2027” – Sule Lamido
Former Jigawa State governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has declared that he will remain in the PDP while supporting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its broader opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Lamido said, “I’ll be in PDP and work for the coalition,” explaining that his political loyalty is to the people and the future of Nigeria, not just to party structures. He compared his decision to that of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike, who remains in the PDP but supports the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lamido recently joined other top PDP leaders at a meeting in Abuja that led to their endorsement of the ADC as the coalition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. He emphasized that Nigeria’s political realities no longer support rigid partisanship and that he is committed to backing the right candidate, regardless of party affiliation.
While some PDP members in Wike’s camp have pledged support for Tinubu in 2027, Lamido took a different stance. He criticized the state of political parties in Nigeria, describing them as weakened by internal divisions and self-interest. He said the PDP’s problems are “self-inflicted,” rooted in hypocrisy and selfishness, but maintained that he will not abandon the party.
“I am not afraid of anybody,” Lamido said, reiterating his commitment to rebuilding the PDP and working toward a coalition that can bring about meaningful change.
