Igbo Community Visits Sokoto Prison to Celebrate Christmas with Inmates, Including Nnamdi Kanu

Members of the Igbo community in Sokoto State visited the Sokoto Correctional Centre on Christmas Day to spend the holiday with inmates, including Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu. The visit was organized by the community leadership, who described it as an effort to extend solidarity and support to all residents of the facility during the festive season.

According to a statement signed by Nze A. C. Madu and released to journalists, the initiative was inspired by the circumstances of Kanu’s detention, but the community made a deliberate decision to include the entire inmate population in the celebration. Approximately 1,300 inmates received festive meals as part of the outreach, ensuring that the event was not limited to a single individual. The leadership emphasized that the effort was intended to provide comfort and a sense of inclusion, reflecting a broader commitment to humanitarian service.

The statement noted that the visit was guided by the Igbo principle of being responsible for one another and the universal values of charity and fellowship. Community leaders said the gesture was aimed at fostering cohesion and goodwill, and hoped it would contribute to lasting peace and understanding beyond the holiday period.

Nnamdi Kanu was moved to the Sokoto Correctional Centre after being sentenced in November 2025 by Justice James Omotosho. Kanu received a life sentence on several counts of terrorism, along with additional fixed-term sentences for other offenses, all without the option of fines. The Christmas visit marked one of the first major outreach efforts involving Kanu since his transfer to the facility.
