“I Will Aim More Jabs at You in 2027” – Shettima Tells Atiku

Vice President Kashim Shettima has playfully warned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to brace for more verbal sparring as the 2027 general elections approach. Speaking at a symposium in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, Shettima made lighthearted remarks about their past political exchanges.

Reflecting on the 2023 presidential election, Shettima described himself as an “adjunct provocateur” who took sharp verbal shots at Atiku. However, he acknowledged that Atiku, as an elder statesman, handled the criticism with grace. In a surprising revelation, Shettima noted that he privately addresses Atiku as “Baba,” a Hausa term for father, despite their political rivalry. The comment drew laughter from the audience, with Atiku himself smiling at the remark.

Beyond the political banter, Shettima called for unity among leaders, regardless of party affiliations. He also emphasized the need for African nations to adopt homegrown development strategies rather than relying on foreign blueprints. According to him, Africa must break free from a “client-state mentality” and governance driven by social media activism.

Shettima stressed that Africa is in a technological era and cannot afford to lag behind. He warned that while other parts of the world are advancing with cutting-edge innovations, Africa must move beyond outdated methods. “The world is not waiting for Africa to catch up,” he cautioned.
