Hunger Protest: Tinubu’s Address Comprehensive, Did Not Disappoint Nigerians – Okupe
Former presidential spokesperson Doyin Okupe commended President Bola Tinubu’s government and its economic policies, stating that the President’s address on the nationwide protests had not disappointed Nigerians.
Okupe, who previously served as director-general of the Labour Party presidential campaign council, praised Tinubu’s transparency regarding the economic challenges faced by his administration since its inception.
“President Bola Tinubu’s speech clearly outlined the daunting economic situation inherited by his administration. He emphasized the strenuous efforts made to reduce the crippling debt servicing ratio from 97% of earned revenue to 68%. This is a significant achievement, as the high debt servicing ratio has been a major cause of our current economic woes,” Okupe remarked.
He highlighted the necessity of removing the fuel subsidy, arguing that without this measure, the government would have struggled to function and meet its obligations without resorting to unsustainable borrowing. Okupe also lauded Tinubu’s commitment to the student loan scheme, with over N45 billion allocated, and the increase in national oil production capacity to more than 1.6 million barrels per day.
“It is important to recognize that the federal government’s revenue distribution allocates 49% to the federal government, approximately 48% to the states and local governments, with the remaining 3% reserved for ecological funds and derivation,” Okupe added.
