How Peter Obi Was Denied Access to VVIP Section at Papal Inauguration Over Missing Invitation Pass
Former Nigerian presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, faced an awkward moment at the Vatican during the papal inauguration ceremony on Sunday after he was denied entry into the VVIP section for lacking the required invitation pass.
A video circulating on social media captured Obi being stopped by Vatican security as he attempted to enter a restricted area at the high-profile event. In the footage, a security officer is heard calmly but firmly informing him that access could not be granted without the appropriate credentials.
The incident, which occurred during the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square, has sparked widespread commentary online. Some users criticized Obi’s apparent lack of preparation, while others questioned why he was not granted access, especially given his support for Cardinal Francis Arinze, a respected African figure in the Catholic Church.
One X user, Pastor Okezie J Atani, mocked Obi and his supporters, stating: “Instead of (Obidients) to concentrate on Peter Obi that was ‘BOUNCED’ from entering the event center even when he was the bag holder for Cardinal Arinze… Peter Gregory Onwubuasi Obi was CLEARLY told ‘YOU ARE NOT WELCOMED INSIDE.’”
While Obi has not released a statement regarding the incident, Vatican protocol officials have clarified that entry into the VVIP section is strictly controlled and requires formal passes approved by the Holy See, regardless of a guest’s political status.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Presidency was seen highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s interaction with Pope Leo XIV during the same event. Tinubu was captured on camera exchanging pleasantries with the newly inaugurated pontiff, alongside other world leaders such as U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
