How Lawyer Allegedly Shot, Killed Orphan at Community Celebration
A somber mood has enveloped Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, following the tragic death of an orphan, Nnamdi Nwite Ugo, who was allegedly killed by a legal practitioner, Sunday Ununu. The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend during a community event organized by the Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
The Izzi Unuphu Power of Attorney group, responsible for overseeing land transactions in the area, had organized an election to select new leaders. During the celebrations that followed, Ununu, who serves as legal counsel to the group, allegedly fired shots into the air in jubilation. Tragically, a stray bullet struck Ugo, piercing his nose and exiting through his mouth, leading to his immediate death.
Sources within the community revealed that the deceased, Ugo, had lost both parents and had no close relatives to advocate on his behalf. Disturbingly, there are reports that efforts are being made to hush up the incident, with negotiations allegedly ongoing between the lawyer’s family and Ugo’s distant relatives to settle the matter quietly.
A video of the event, showing Ununu wearing a yellow T-shirt and discharging his firearm, has surfaced on social media, sparking outrage and calls for justice.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed Ununu’s arrest in connection with the incident. Speaking to the press, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, acknowledged that the suspect is currently in police custody. However, he declined to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the case.
