How Jonathan Chickened Out of PDP Reforms Amid Governor Pressure – New Book Reveals
Former President Goodluck Jonathan backed down from critical reform efforts aimed at financially restructuring the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after pressure from influential party governors, according to a new book by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi. The account is detailed in *“Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist”*, launched recently in Abuja with several PDP stakeholders in attendance.
The book reveals that Jonathan initially supported a proposal by then PDP National Chairman, Okwesilieze Nwodo, to introduce a self-funding model that would make the party financially independent. The plan was for 10 million party members to contribute N1000 annually, generating up to N10 billion a year and reducing reliance on wealthy sponsors.
After a pilot demonstration of the initiative at the Aso Rock Villa, Jonathan reportedly gave his approval. However, when the proposal reached the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), state governors opposed it and Jonathan did not push back. Led by then Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the governors argued the reform would weaken their control over the party ahead of key elections.
The book claims Jonathan failed to stand his ground, allowing the governors to shut down the initiative. This, according to Abonyi, led to the collapse of the reform effort and reinforced the grip of political heavyweights over the party’s structure and funding.
The governors later orchestrated the removal of Nwodo as national chairman to prevent any future reform agenda. The book argues that this moment marked the beginning of the PDP’s internal decline and eventual loss of national power.
