History Repeats: Wike-Fubara Feud Reflects Familiar Godfather-Godson Struggles

In a fiery exchange of words, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has shed light on his escalating conflict with estranged godson Siminalayi Fubara, declaring his disdain for ingratitude. The political atmosphere in Rivers State is charged as this godfather-godson duo adds another chapter to the history of power struggles.

This clash echoes past political feuds where incumbent governors faced off against their godfathers. Notable instances include the battle between Peter Obi and Willie Obiano in Anambra, where initial camaraderie gave way to intense rivalry.

Similarly, the rift between Godswill Akpabio and Emmanuel Udom in Akwa-Ibom, marked by promises of avoiding conflict, eventually led to Akpabio leaving the party. Udom emerged victorious in 2019, retaining control.

Abia State witnessed a bitter falling-out between Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Orji, former allies turned political adversaries. The tides shifted, leading to a change in political dominance.

Enugu’s political landscape was shaken by the clash between Chimaroke Nnamani and Sullivan Chime. Chime, once chosen by Nnamani, later banned the Ebeano group, sparking a prolonged feud.

In Kano, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Umar Ganduje’s once inseparable bond soured post-2015 elections, resulting in a struggle for political supremacy. Kwankwaso eventually regained control in 2023.

The tussle between Adams Oshiomhole and Godwin Obaseki in Edo demonstrated how a godfather’s influence could sway party dynamics. Obaseki’s move to the PDP and subsequent re-election underscored a shift in power.

Sokoto witnessed tension between Aliyu Wamakko and Aminu Tambuwal during the APC wave of 2015. Tambuwal, with other plans in mind, returned to the PDP, securing a second term in 2019.

Lagos showcased the power dynamic between Bola Tinubu and Akinwunmi Ambode. Despite initial support, Ambode faced defeat in the primaries, highlighting instances when a godfather prevails.

Cross Rivers saw a fallout between Liyel Imoke and Ben Ayade, leading Ayade to exit the PDP for the APC. Similarly, Benue witnessed shifts in political alliances as George Akume and Gabriel Suswan’s collaboration gave way to discord.

Delta’s political landscape underwent transformation as James Ibori’s influence was challenged by Ifeanyi Okowa. Despite facing defeat in the presidential election, Okowa emerged victorious in the state, signaling a shift in power dynamics.

As Wike and Fubara’s feud intensifies, the Rivers State saga joins a legacy of political conflicts, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of godfather-godson relationships in Nigerian politics.
