Hezbollah Fires 200 Rockets, Drones into Israel, Triggering Wildfires
The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fired over 200 rockets and attack drones into northern Israel today. This follows the killing of senior Hezbollah commander Mohammed Nimah Nasser in an Israeli airstrike near Tyre, Lebanon.
The intense barrage resulted in numerous wildfires across the region, with firefighters battling blazes in areas like Mevuot Hermon in the Upper Galilee. Tragically, the assault also claimed the life of an Israeli military officer.
In retaliation, the Israeli military targeted Hezbollah’s military structures and other positions in southern Lebanon. Lebanese reports indicate that an Israeli drone strike killed one person in the town of Houla.
This latest attack marks one of the largest exchanges in the nine months of sustained cross-border violence, intensifying fears of a broader conflict. The death of Nasser, a key figure commanding Hezbollah’s Aziz Unit responsible for rocket launches from southwestern Lebanon, has further fueled tensions. Nasser was reportedly behind numerous terror attacks and was considered a counterpart to Taleb Sami Abdullah, another commander whose death last month triggered a similar large-scale rocket assault.
The ongoing conflict, which began following the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza on 7 October, has seen daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah claims its actions support the Palestinian group Hamas, both backed by Iran. These groups are designated as terrorist organizations by Israel, the UK, and several other countries.
The conflict has caused significant casualties, with over 400 people killed in Lebanon, predominantly Hezbollah fighters, and 25 in Israel, mostly soldiers. It has also displaced tens of thousands from border communities on both sides.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to restore security in northern Israel. “In the tough campaign against Lebanon, we have set a principle – whoever harms us is a dead man. We are making that a reality in practice,” he stated.
A senior Hezbollah official, Hashem Safieddine, warned of further attacks during Nasser’s funeral in Beirut, promising to “target new sites that the enemy did not imagine would be hit.”
The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Unifil, has expressed grave concerns over the escalating conflict. Kandice Ardiel, a Unifil spokeswoman, emphasized the need for restraint to prevent further escalation.
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation continue, with warnings from the UN and the US about the catastrophic potential of a wider war. Israeli officials have signaled readiness for further military action if necessary, while Hezbollah has declared its readiness to fight “without rules” if war breaks out, despite a preference to avoid full-scale conflict.
As tensions simmer, the situation remains precarious, with international stakeholders urging both sides to pursue peaceful resolutions to avoid a broader and more devastating conflict.
