Gunmen Kill Two Policemen Escorting Ebonyi Lawmaker in Imo
Two police officers attached to the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Kingsley Ikoro, were killed in an ambush by unidentified gunmen in Okigwe, Imo State, on Sunday, August 3.
According to reports, the officers were part of Ikoro’s convoy when one of the vehicles developed a mechanical fault. While the rest of the entourage continued on their journey, the two officers remained behind with the faulty vehicle. It was during this delay that they were attacked and killed by the assailants.
Okigwe, located in the northern part of Imo State, has been known as a hotspot for violent attacks in recent times.
Reacting to the incident, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, condemned the killings and assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. “There is no hiding place for those behind this heinous crime,” he stated. He confirmed that the bodies of the officers have been recovered and moved to a morgue, while a full investigation has commenced.
Okoye added that tactical teams have been deployed to comb the surrounding areas in a manhunt for the gunmen, vowing that they will face the full weight of the law.
