Gunmen Kill 13 Vigilantes in Kebbi State Attack
Gunmen suspected to be members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have killed at least 13 vigilantes in Morai village, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The incident occurred on Sunday following an attempted cattle rustling operation by the assailants.
According to a local source, Alhaji Augie, the vigilantes had received intelligence about a possible attack and took cover in surrounding bushes to prepare an ambush. When the armed men arrived to rustle cattle, the vigilantes moved in to confront them but were caught off guard, as the attackers had already surrounded their position.
“They didn’t know the terrorists had encircled them. As soon as they moved in, the gunmen opened fire and killed at least 13 of them on the spot,” Augie told Channels Television. He added that Morai village is located about three kilometers from his own community.
As of the time of reporting, six bodies have been recovered and buried according to Islamic rites, while search efforts continue for the remaining victims.
Attempts to get an official statement from the Kebbi State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Abubakar, did not respond to calls or messages.
