Gunmen Invade Anambra Community Amid Traditional Stool Crisis, Residents Flee

Tension has escalated in Ojoto, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, following an invasion by gunmen targeting prominent individuals amid an ongoing dispute over the community’s traditional stool.

The attack, which occurred around 1 a.m. last Friday, led to the abduction of one individual. However, security operatives from the neighboring community of Oba successfully rescued the victim. Fearing further attacks, the victim has since relocated with their family.

The crisis stems from a contentious battle between two prominent sons of Ojoto, Gerald Mbamalu and Dennis Okafor, both claiming the traditional throne. Despite the community selecting Okafor through customary rites, the government officially handed the staff of office to Mbamalu, leading to a legal dispute at the Nnewi High Court.

The invasion has left many residents in fear, with some fleeing the community while others remained indoors during the festive season. The attack has heightened tensions, worsening an already volatile situation.

Security efforts have led to the arrest of four suspected gunmen by the Oba Vigilante Group. A senior police officer confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. The officer reassured the public that security forces are committed to maintaining order and urged all parties to allow the court to decide on the matter.
