Gunmen Claim 26 Lives, Including Six Security Personnel, in Benue State Attacks

Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have unleashed terror upon three communities in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State, claiming the lives of 26 individuals. Among the victims were six state security personnel, comprising members of the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards and Livestock Guards.

The onslaught began between Saturday and Monday, targeting Mbakunwande, Jaora communities, and the Naka-Adoka Road. The most recent attack occurred as security operatives were fulfilling their duty to provide protection for a family during a burial ceremony. Tragically, they were ambushed and killed in the line of duty.

Henry Agba, the chairman of Gwer West LGA, confirmed the devastating incident to journalists on Tuesday. According to Agba, the violence commenced on Saturday evening with an attack on Jaroa community, resulting in the loss of 14 lives. The following Monday witnessed another assault along the Naka-Adoka Road, where six more individuals fell victim to the brutality of the assailants.

Agba emphasized the critical role played by the state security personnel in escorting the bereaved family and highlighted the vulnerability of the communities in the face of such ruthless attacks.

Efforts to address the situation have been initiated, with the Benue State Police and Joseph Har, the state security adviser, being promptly notified of the incidents. Har himself visited one of the attack sites on Monday, underscoring the urgency and severity of the situation.

As the affected communities reel from the shock and devastation wrought by these heinous acts, authorities are urged to swiftly investigate the attacks and apprehend those responsible, while measures to bolster security and protect innocent lives are advocated for by concerned citizens and officials alike.
