Guinea’s Former President Moussa Dadis Camara Sentenced to 20 Years for 2009 Stadium Massacre

Former Guinean military dictator Captain Moussa Dadis Camara has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the 2009 massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators. The ruling was delivered by Judge Ibrahima Sory II Tounkara in a courtroom in Conakry on Wednesday.

 

Camara was found guilty of crimes against humanity, with the court emphasizing his command responsibility during the tragic events. The 2009 massacre saw soldiers open fire on demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of over 150 people and numerous injuries. Reports also indicated that more than 100 women were raped during the incident.

 

Aboubacar Diakité, the former head of the presidential guard, received a 10-year prison sentence for his involvement in the massacre. Camara, who seized power in a coup following the death of long-time President Lansana Conté in 2008, was sentenced alongside several of his ministers, security officials, and other associates.
