Government Distributes Over 700 Zebras, Elephants, Other Game Meat to Combat Widespread Hunger Amid Severe Drought Crisis

The Namibian government has initiated the distribution of game meat to alleviate widespread hunger affecting its citizens. The drought, which has gripped the Southern African nation, has left many facing severe food insecurity.

The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism recently announced the measure, stating that a total of 723 animals, including elands, wildebeests, impalas, and buffalos, will be culled and distributed. This move is part of the government’s broader drought relief program, approved by the Cabinet.

“The Ministry, with Cabinet approval, is contributing game meat to support the drought relief program by the government. The Ministry will contribute 723 animals comprising 30 hippos, 60 buffalos, 50 impalas, 100 blue wildebeests, 300 zebras, 83 elephants, and 100 elands,” the statement read. “The animals are sourced from national parks and communal areas with sustainable game numbers.”

The initiative also aims to mitigate potential conflicts between humans and wildlife, as the drought forces animals to venture outside their natural habitats in search of food and water. The government plans to cull 83 elephants from identified conflict areas, with the meat to be allocated to the drought relief efforts under the Office of the Prime Minister.

The United Nations has highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that 84% of Namibia’s food reserves are depleted, with nearly half of the population expected to face high levels of food insecurity between July and September. The UN described the drought as a “humanitarian crisis” and announced a $3 million allocation from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to support Namibia’s response to the crisis.
