6 Fans Perish in Guinea’s AFCON Victory Celebrations
Six passionate Guinean football supporters lost their lives while celebrating Guinea’s historic triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. The revelry took a tragic turn in the Guinean capital, Conakry, as fans flooded the streets in jubilation following their national team’s 1-0 victory against The Gambia on Friday night.
The Guinean Football Federation (Feguifoot) disclosed the unfortunate incident to the BBC, revealing that the casualties occurred during exuberant celebrations involving cars and motorcycles. Amadou Makadji, Feguifoot’s media manager, emphasized the need for measured celebrations, urging fans to prioritize safety. He stressed that while football aims to bring joy, it should not result in mourning for families.
Guinea’s victory, marked by Aguibou Camara’s decisive goal, propelled them to second place in Group C with four points. This places them two points behind defending champions Senegal and three points ahead of third-placed Cameroon. The tragic toll of the celebrations included a collision between two vehicles at high speed, claiming three lives, with several dozen others sustaining injuries in road accidents.
Police sources reported that many fans engaged in reckless behavior, driving on car bonnets as the capital’s roads overflowed with celebratory crowds. Feguifoot, along with former star Pascal Feindouno, has called for calm among the country’s football enthusiasts. Feindouno, who played in four Nations Cups, conveyed a heartfelt message to the Guinean community, emphasizing the importance of celebrating responsibly.
As the AFCON 2023 unfolds, Guinea’s triumph is shadowed by the loss of lives during the festivities. The tournament, which commenced on January 13, is slated to culminate in the final in Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s economic capital, on February 11.
