Ex-Bodyguard of Sierra Leone’s Former President Sentenced to 182 Years in Prison Over Failed Coup

Amadu Koita Makalo, the former bodyguard of Sierra Leone’s ex-President Ernest Bai Koroma, has been sentenced to 182 years in prison. Makalo’s conviction stems from his involvement in a failed coup attempt last year, which aimed to overthrow the current government.

Makalo, who previously served as a soldier, faced charges of treason, murder, and shooting with intent to murder. He was tried alongside 10 other individuals implicated in the coup plot. According to the local newspaper Awoko, the presiding judge emphasized the sentencing’s purpose as a deterrent, stating, “The purpose of this sentence is to serve as a deterrent for people to know that coups or attempted coups to overthrow any legitimate government is no longer accepted.”

Judicial spokesman Komba Kamanda reiterated the judge’s stance, noting, “This sentence is meant to deter others from attempting such actions.”

The failed coup, which occurred in November, involved coordinated attacks on a military barracks and multiple prisons, leading to the escape of over 2,000 prisoners and resulting in at least 20 deaths. The government quickly regained control, branding the attack as an effort to destabilize the state.

Makalo, who gained a following on social media for his vocal criticism of the government, was identified as a key organizer of the coup. Throughout the trial, he reportedly showed no remorse for his actions.

This sentencing follows a contentious election in which President Julius Maada Bio narrowly secured re-election for a second term. In connection with the coup attempt, former President Koroma, who led Sierra Leone for 11 years until 2018, was also charged with treason. Koroma, however, denied the charges and has not returned to Sierra Leone since he was permitted to travel to Nigeria for medical treatment.
