Governor Obaseki: “I Desire Going Back to School After Tenure, No Plan to Be Godfather
In a recent interview with THISDAY, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State revealed his post-tenure plans, emphasizing a desire to pursue further education, engage in research, and impart knowledge. With just months left in his second term, Governor Obaseki clarified that he has no intentions of assuming the role of a godfather in the state’s political landscape.
Governor Obaseki’s political journey has been marked by shifts between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After a fallout with his former godfather, former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Governor Obaseki joined the PDP and secured re-election.
Reflecting on his diverse experiences, Governor Obaseki expressed gratitude for his background in both the private sector and government. He articulated his vision of supporting and nurturing others by sharing his experiences and knowledge.
When questioned about the possibility of establishing himself as a godfather figure in Edo politics, Governor Obaseki dismissed the notion, stating, “There is no need to.” He emphasized the importance of mentoring without exerting control, highlighting his preference for autonomy and his commitment to empowering others.
Governor Obaseki further illustrated his stance by referencing his support for a highly esteemed lawyer to manage the affairs of the state after him, emphasizing the importance of allowing competent individuals to lead without undue interference.
As his tenure draws to a close, Governor Obaseki’s plans underscore a dedication to continuous learning and a commitment to fostering a culture of mentorship and empowerment in Edo State.
