Edo Governor Reacts to Attack on Peter Obi, ADC Chieftains, Blames Internal Party Rivalry

Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the recent attack on members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as an escalation of internal party tensions.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Okpebholo expressed sympathy for those affected and criticized individuals who allegedly exploited Edo State’s calm environment to provoke violence.

“As peace-loving citizens, we categorically condemn and will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political activity,” he said. The governor added that, as Edo State’s Chief Security Officer, he would ensure the state does not become a battleground for political rivalry.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, Okpebholo suggested it appears aimed at discrediting the state and undermining its reputation for peace. He emphasized that politics should center on performance, public engagement, and earning citizens’ trust, rather than intimidation or violence.

The governor also urged the ADC to avoid attributing blame externally, noting that the conflict seems rooted in internal disagreements. He called on all political parties to settle internal disputes before organising public events, warning that attempts to incite violence would be firmly addressed.

Okpebholo appealed to Edo residents to remain calm and maintain the state’s longstanding peaceful image. He instructed security agencies to monitor political gatherings closely to safeguard lives and property across the state.
