Governor Mbah Commissions New Roads, Renames Abakpa Road After Music Legend Mike Ejeagha
On Monday, Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah officially commissioned four newly constructed and reconstructed roads in the Abakpa Nike area of Enugu metropolis. Among the roads inaugurated were Mike Ejeagha Crescent and the adjoining Obinagu Road, the latter of which has been renamed in honor of the renowned music legend Mike Ejeagha.
The other roads commissioned include Texaco Bus Stop-Ifo Road and Nkpor Street. During the ceremony, Governor Mbah also visited Ejeagha at his residence and announced that the state government would assume full responsibility for the music legend’s upkeep, describing him as a living icon.
Governor Mbah highlighted the significance of the event by reflecting on past commitments. He reminded residents of the administration’s pledge to pave all urban roads in Enugu and noted that while 71 urban roads and 10 rural roads had been completed, the roads being commissioned were not part of this initial set but were addressed as urgent needs identified earlier this year.
“The road leading to Mike Ejeagha’s home stands out as a tribute to one of our great legends,” Mbah said. “Enugu State is renowned for its legends, both in sports and music, and Mike Ejeagha’s folk songs have significantly contributed to our cultural heritage. Naming Obinagu Road after him is a way to honor his contributions while he is still with us.”
The governor also assured residents that the commissioning of these roads marks the beginning of a broader infrastructure development plan. He announced upcoming projects, including the dualization of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road to Opi-Nsukka, emphasizing a continued commitment to improving road infrastructure in Abakpa and throughout the state.
Engr. Gerald Otiji, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, and the Special Adviser on Project Development and Implementation, both emphasized that the roads were constructed with durability and user convenience in mind. The roads feature a robust construction with various layers of sub-grade, sub-base, stone base course, asphalt, and reinforced concrete drainage systems.
In his remarks, Ejeagha, represented by his children Emma Ejeagha and Elizabeth Ugwu, expressed profound gratitude for the honor, noting that previous administrations had made promises without fulfillment. “Governor Mbah has exceeded our expectations. We awoke to find new roads and the Gwo gwo gwo ngwo trend began shortly after,” Emma Ejeagha stated.
Residents also praised the governor’s efforts, noting the positive impact of the new infrastructure on their businesses and daily lives. The event concluded with Governor Mbah joining in a celebratory dance, delighting the local community.
