Governor Diri Fires 27 Aides for Attending Pro-Tinubu, Pro-Wike Rally

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has dismissed 27 of his political aides for participating in the inauguration of the Bayelsa chapter of The NEW Associates, a grassroots political movement, and attending a mega rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The terminations, confirmed in a letter dated April 23, 2025, were signed by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Irorodamie Komonibo, and declared the dismissals effective immediately.

The letter stated that the aides’ appointments had been communicated through previously issued reference letters and were now officially terminated due to their involvement in activities seen as contrary to the administration’s interests. The dismissals have sparked strong criticism from within Governor Diri’s own party.

Reacting to the development, the Bayelsa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) issued a statement condemning the move. The statement, signed by Derri Alasuote Wright, Publicity Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in the state, described the action as “an alarming demonstration of intolerance and high-handedness.” The party expressed disappointment, noting that those dismissed had worked tirelessly for the PDP’s success in the most recent gubernatorial election, which secured Diri’s re-election.

The PDP emphasized that these individuals were loyal party members committed to the administration’s vision, and argued that their dismissal undermines democratic principles and discourages political engagement. The party also criticized what it viewed as an abuse of public office, reminding Governor Diri that public resources and governance are not personal property.

Calling the dismissals a “severe breach of trust and an affront to democratic participation,” the PDP urged the governor to reverse the decision and foster an environment of inclusivity and tolerance. The statement concluded with an appeal to all political stakeholders in Bayelsa and across Nigeria to reject divisive politics and defend the right to free association in a democratic society.
