Governor Aiyedatiwa in Search for Deputy Amidst Speculations, Controversies
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has initiated the process of selecting his deputy, sparking speculation and controversies within the political landscape. The announcement of his deputy is anticipated next week, following consultations with President Bola Tinubu to finalize the choice.
Sources suggest that Governor Aiyedatiwa is leaning towards the central senatorial district for his deputy selection. Razaq Obe, the current Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, is rumored to be Aiyedatiwa’s preferred choice. However, party leaders express concerns, labeling him as desperate and potentially disruptive in the future.
Razaq Obe’s appointment as commissioner was reportedly influenced by the recommendation of Betty Akeredolu, the late governor’s wife. Despite this, party leaders favor another candidate from the central senatorial district—Sunday Abegunde, a former Secretary to the State Government and an ally of President Tinubu.
Abegunde, recently appointed as the Executive Director, Corporate Services of the Niger Delta Development Commission, is viewed more favorably by party leaders. Both Obe and Abegunde hail from the central senatorial district, adding another layer of complexity to the decision-making process.
A crucial factor in the selection debate revolves around the geographical origin of the deputy governor. While some leaders insist on choosing from the northern senatorial district, honoring the late governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s legacy, others argue for fairness by assigning the position to the central senatorial district.
A party leader emphasized that the ultimate decision rests with Governor Aiyedatiwa, acknowledging his authority in selecting a deputy who can effectively collaborate with him. Meanwhile, an aide to the governor assures the public that the party will play a significant role in the decision-making process, emphasizing the importance of a carefully chosen deputy as the gubernatorial election looms ahead.
The unfolding drama around Governor Aiyedatiwa’s deputy selection underscores the complexities and competing interests within Ondo State’s political landscape. As the governor navigates this decision, the anticipation and speculation surrounding his choice continue to capture the attention of political observers and the public alike.
