Gov Sanwo-Olu Breaks Silence on Rumoured Lawsuit Against EFCC

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has firmly dismissed widespread rumors suggesting he has filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This speculation follows unverified reports that the EFCC is planning to arrest and prosecute him after he leaves office.

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, issued an official statement refuting the claims. He clarified that neither Governor Sanwo-Olu nor any legal representative has initiated legal proceedings against the EFCC, underscoring that the governor remains focused on his current duties.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu enjoys constitutional immunity, with nearly three years left in his term,” Pedro remarked. “He has neither filed a lawsuit nor engaged legal counsel over any alleged EFCC actions.”

Pedro also dispelled any notion of an ongoing EFCC investigation into Governor Sanwo-Olu, labeling the rumors as baseless. “There is no investigation, nor has there been any threat of arrest against the governor or his staff,” he affirmed. He further shared that state officials are investigating the origin of these claims to understand how such misinformation circulated without their knowledge.

Pedro reiterated Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to public service, emphasizing that he remains dedicated to improving the welfare of Lagosians and ensuring prudent management of the state’s resources. “Governor Sanwo-Olu has nothing to fear after his tenure ends in May 2027,” Pedro stated confidently.

The Attorney General also advised media outlets to maintain rigorous standards in their reporting, urging journalists to verify information before publication to avoid misinforming the public.

“We encourage all journalists to base their stories on verified facts,” Pedro concluded, cautioning against the spread of unsubstantiated claims that could affect public opinion.
