CAN Petitions Sanwo-Olu Over Alleged Marginalisation of Christians in Surulere Politics

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State has petitioned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu over what it describes as the marginalisation of Christians in political leadership within the area.

In a letter dated March 10, 2026, the Surulere CAN chairman, James Akingboye, alongside nine other officials, expressed concern that the current political structure does not reflect the religious composition of the community. The group warned that the situation could affect social balance if left unaddressed.

According to the association, only one of the 13 individuals holding federal and state political offices from Surulere is a Christian. The official identified is Desmond Elliot, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

CAN noted that other prominent political figures from the area — including Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff to the president; Fuad Laguda, a member of the House of Representatives; Sulaimon Bamidele, chairman of Surulere LGA; and Muiz Dosumu, vice-chairman of the council — are Muslims.

The association stated that Surulere has a history of religious coexistence and shared civic contribution, adding that the petition is intended to highlight concerns about representation rather than provoke division.

It argued that sustained imbalance in political appointments is not consistent with the character of a plural society and called for leadership structures that reflect the area’s diversity.

CAN also raised concern about the possibility of the only Christian office holder being replaced, warning that such a development would further reduce Christian participation in decision-making processes.

The group urged the governor to promote equitable representation, specifically recommending that the positions of Surulere party secretary and treasurer be assigned to qualified Christians.
