“Go Abroad and Return When We Fix Nigeria” – Peter Obi Tells Students
Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in Nigeria’s 2023 elections, has urged Nigerian students to seek opportunities abroad if they cannot find fulfillment within the country, promising that they will be welcomed back once the nation’s challenges are addressed. Speaking during a visit to Peter University in Achina/Onneh and the College of Nursing Sciences in Adazi-Nnukwu, both located in Anambra State, Obi emphasized his belief in the transformative power of education and encouraged students to take their studies seriously as part of their personal and national development.
During his visit, Obi made donations to both institutions as part of his ongoing commitment to support educational and professional growth in the region. Addressing the students of the College of Nursing Sciences, Obi acknowledged the difficulties faced by many Nigerians, particularly graduates, in finding suitable employment opportunities in the country. He encouraged the students to pursue their careers where they can thrive, even if it means going abroad.
“I was here in May to support you, and I promised this support last year, but I couldn’t come because of election duties,” Obi explained. “This is something I do every year, and today, I’m here to fulfill my promise. Those of us in public life must earn the public’s trust, and that’s why I’m here today to do as I said.”
Obi also reassured the students that they should not feel restricted by local constraints. He specifically addressed the Nursing Council, encouraging them to allow graduates the freedom to seek opportunities overseas if it better aligns with their career goals. “If it is not going to work for you here, go to where it will work for you. We will not advise anyone to stay where it is difficult for them,” Obi said. “If you want to seek greener pastures outside, please go. I’m sure that when we build a greater Nigeria, you will come back.”
At Peter University, Obi spoke about the importance of education as a powerful tool for national progress. He urged students to take their academic pursuits seriously, stressing that education is an investment in the future of both individuals and the nation. “Education is transformative,” he said. “It is the foundation of national development, and with the right knowledge and skills, you can make a significant contribution to Nigeria’s growth.”
