Genotype: Bauchi Couple Calls Off Wedding Days Before Ceremony
A couple in Bauchi State has made the difficult decision to cancel their wedding, scheduled for November 29, 2024, after discovering that they are genetically incompatible. Muhammad Ibrahim, a Zoology graduate from Bauchi State University, announced the cancellation on Facebook on November 21, 2024, revealing that both he and his fiancée, Fatima Abdulqadir, are carriers of the AS genotype. This poses a significant risk of having children with sickle cell disease.
The couple, who had been in a three-year relationship, had not initially prioritized genotype testing, assuming it would not pose any issues. However, after undergoing tests at two separate hospitals last month, they learned of their genetic compatibility issue. Ibrahim described the news as a “devastating shock” and explained that although some family members encouraged them to go ahead with the wedding, they ultimately decided against it due to concerns over the potential health risks to their future children.
Ibrahim’s announcement has sparked a wave of sympathy from friends and family on social media, many of whom praised the couple for their courage in making such a difficult decision. One commenter wrote, “It’s for the unborn children not to suffer,” while another urged others to prioritize genotype testing early in relationships.
In his post, Ibrahim expressed his heartbreak over the situation, asking for prayers and understanding during this challenging time.
