Full List: Nationwide Protest Planned with 15 Key Demands, Including Release of Nnamdi Kanu, Reinstatement of Fuel Subsidy

Organizers of a major nationwide protest, set to take place from August 1 to August 10, have released a comprehensive list of demands directed at President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The planned protest, driven by widespread discontent over the nation’s economic challenges, aims to mobilize citizens across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Despite government efforts to discourage the movement, youth groups remain determined to proceed.

Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and a key organizer, shared the demands with newsmen on Wednesday. The protest, titled “Days of Rage” or “EndBadGovernance,” seeks to address several critical issues affecting Nigeria.

The primary demands include the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy, improvements in the power sector, and the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the Department of State Services (DSS). Additionally, the protesters are calling for the introduction of diaspora voting in general elections.

Sowore emphasized that the protesters are calling for several systemic reforms:

• Abolition of the 1999 constitution in favor of a new constitution created through a sovereign National Conference and national referendum.
• Elimination of the Senate, while retaining a part-time House of Representatives for legislative functions.
• Increase in the minimum wage to N250,000 per month.
• Significant investment in education, including grants for students and a push for free and compulsory education for all children.
• Release of all political detainees, including Nnamdi Kanu, and demilitarization of the South East.
• Rationalization of public enterprises and reinstatement of a corruption-free subsidy regime.
• Investigation and recovery of funds embezzled by past and present leaders, with the recovered funds to be allocated to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
• Restructuring of Nigeria to address regional diversity and resource control, along with efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, and violent crime.
• Reform of security agencies to end human rights violations and establishment of a dedicated energy sector for corruption-free power development.
• Overhaul of the electoral body, INEC, to eliminate corruption and political bias.
• Increased investment in public works and industrialization to create jobs for Nigeria’s youth.
• Comprehensive reforms in the judiciary to address corruption and ensure justice.
• Provision for diaspora voting.

In response, President Tinubu has urged Nigerians to reconsider participating in the protest, expressing confidence in his administration’s ability to address the country’s challenges and effect positive change.
