SEDC: “Say No to Protests, Embrace Unity and Progress,” Deputy Speaker, Kalu Begs Ndi Igbo
In a recent address, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has urged his Igbo compatriots and all Nigerians to refrain from participating in planned protests, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signing of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law.
At a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Kalu emphasized that the new legislation signifies a commitment from the Tinubu administration to address past grievances and foster equitable growth in the South East. He urged the people of the region to see this development as a step towards healing and progress, rather than turning to agitation and unrest.
“To my fellow South Easterners, I implore you not to engage in the planned anti-government protests,” Kalu stated. “This bill represents a testament to the President’s dedication to addressing historical injustices and rejuvenating our region’s socio-economic landscape. This is a time for unity and peace, not for division and conflict.”
Kalu also called on Nigerians nationwide to trust the democratic process and support government efforts to create policies centered around the welfare of the people. He assured that with patience and continued support, the reforms introduced by the administration will eventually bring about economic stability and job creation through initiatives like the SEDC.
The Deputy Speaker highlighted the potential benefits of the SEDC, including improvements in agriculture, industrialization, and the digital economy. He expressed hope that the commission would drive significant development in the region, providing productive opportunities for the youth and contributing to overall national progress.
Kalu extended his gratitude to President Tinubu for signing the bill into law and thanked the governors of the five southeastern states for their support. He reiterated that through collaboration and peaceful means, much can be achieved for the betterment of the region and the nation at large.
This legislation establishes the South East Development Commission with the mandate to manage funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged during the civil war, 54 years after the conflict’s end. Kalu’s call for unity and patience underscores a pivotal moment for the South East as it looks forward to renewed development and reconciliation.
