Fubara Approves Construction of Psychiatric Hospital in Wike’s Hometown, Says ‘They’ll Need It Soon’
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has approved the construction of a modern psychiatric hospital in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, a significant political move given that it is the hometown of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Fubara’s estranged political godfather.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Fubara and Wike, who have been locked in a power struggle over control of Rivers State. Wike has publicly criticized Fubara, accusing him of abandoning those who helped him rise to power. During a reception organized by the Ijaw Peoples Assembly in Port Harcourt, Wike hinted at political retribution, stating that when the time comes, he would teach Fubara and his supporters a lesson.
However, in a sharp response during an inter-denominational thanksgiving service marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in Port Harcourt, Fubara defended his administration’s achievements. He highlighted his government’s progress in one year, contrasting it with the eight-year tenure of his predecessors.
Fubara specifically pointed out his major infrastructure projects, including the Port Harcourt Ring Road and the Trans-Kalabari Road, as well as the construction of a General Hospital and the newly approved psychiatric hospital. Referring to his opponents, Fubara quipped, “They will need it very soon.”
The governor emphasized that his administration’s focus is on projects that serve the people of Rivers State, rather than personal business interests, and assured that any project started under his watch would be completed and put to public use.
