Four Killed in Enugu Security Operation Targeting IPOB/ESN Suspected Members

A team of Nigerian soldiers, police officers, and Department of State Services (DSS) personnel neutralized at least four alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Enugu State on Wednesday. Authorities report that the operation resulted in the recovery of a cache of weapons and ammunition from a camp reportedly used by the suspects.

The operation took place in the early hours at Eha-Alumona in the Nsukka local government area, where the joint security team intercepted and overpowered the suspected ESN members following what officials describe as an intense exchange of gunfire. Several other alleged operatives reportedly fled into the surrounding forest with injuries sustained during the confrontation.

According to a statement from Governor Peter Mbah’s media office, the suspects were allegedly planning attacks on specific parts of Enugu State, including areas within the capital city. The statement also noted that an ESN commander, who had been wanted for a series of prior incidents, was apprehended after the lengthy standoff. Following the arrest, the commander reportedly led security personnel to additional hideouts containing stashed arms, charms, and other dangerous materials.

The confrontation left two security officers injured, who, according to the governor’s office, are currently in stable condition and receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Governor Mbah, who has prioritized tightening security in Enugu State, recently established a Distress Response Squad (DRS) and invested in advanced surveillance technology and a Command and Control Centre. These measures, he said, are aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring peace and security across the state.
